The second week of DROP-IN classes brings a new selection of topics from the fields of Business and Legal English, with a focus on current issues that provide a basis for professional discussion, argumentation and the exchange of different professional perspectives.

In the Legal English programme, we will discuss, among other things, the principle of immediacy and whether every witness should be heard in person, as well as whether written evidence can replace oral testimony. Contracts of Adhesion open up the question of genuine consent when one party determines the contractual terms in advance and the other can only accept or reject them.

The topics No Victim, No Crime? and Punishment Without Prison take us into the area of criminal law, exploring questions surrounding the existence of a criminal offence without a clearly identifiable victim, the limits of state intervention, and the possibility of electronic monitoring and house arrest replacing imprisonment.

In Punishing Corporations, we will examine corporate liability and corporate punishment, including whether sanctions should be linked to a company’s revenue or size, as well as the consequences of sanctioning a company for its employees and other stakeholders.

Punitive Damages, an institution unknown to continental European law, raises a somewhat different question: Is compensation sometimes not enough, and should certain damages also serve a punitive purpose in cases of particularly serious unlawful conduct, rather than merely compensate for the harm caused?

The Business English programme goes beyond business terminology, too. The second week’s topics include returning to work and burnout syndrome; responsibility for waste disposal; questions surrounding modern education; the future of Europe; road safety; and European Union enlargement.

The topics are the starting point; English is at the heart of it all. Current issues provide the framework for genuine discussion in which participants express their views, exchange perspectives and develop arguments. What matters is not what they think, but how they formulate their views and how those views sound in a specific professional context – how they agree or disagree, how they soften or emphasise a particular statement, how they respond to opposing views, and how they adapt their arguments to the purpose of the communication.

In other words, it is not what you think that matters most, but how it sounds when you say it — and whether you can express your position in a way that suits the situation, your interlocutor and the purpose of the communication.
